Under the dual structure of urban and rural areas in China, the uneven distribution of educational resources has always been a focus of social concern. According to the "China Education Modernization Monitoring Report" released by the Ministry of Education in 2025, the coverage rate of high-quality teachers for urban students is about 3.2 times that of rural areas, while there is still a significant gap in information technology teaching equipment, digital curriculum resources, and other aspects in rural schools. In recent years, the new generation of information technology represented by artificial intelligence is providing a new possible path to bridge this gap.

1、 Intelligent tutoring: personalized teaching that breaks through geographical limitations
The AI intelligent tutoring system is currently one of the most direct application scenarios. Through adaptive learning algorithms, the system can dynamically adjust teaching content and difficulty based on students' knowledge mastery, learning speed, and weak links. Taking the product of a leading educational technology company in China as an example, its AI learning system has been deployed in rural schools in Henan, Guizhou, Yunnan and other places, covering over 2000 rural primary and secondary schools. Pilot data shows that students who use AI tutoring systems have an average improvement of about 15% in math grades, and their interest and confidence in learning have also significantly increased.
Unlike the traditional online education model of simply recording and live streaming, the core advantage of AI tutoring systems lies in their real-time interaction and personalized recommendation capabilities. The system can identify common types of errors for each student (such as common scoring errors in score calculations and deviations in summarizing the main idea in reading comprehension), and push targeted practice questions and instructional videos to achieve the teaching strategy of "thousands of people, thousands of faces".
2、 AI Empowering Teachers: From Replacement to Enhancement
A common misconception is that AI will replace rural teachers. In fact, in the current technological environment, the more effective role of AI is as a teaching assistant for teachers. AI systems can automatically complete repetitive tasks such as homework grading, learning situation analysis, and lesson preparation resource recommendation, helping teachers to invest more energy into classroom interaction and personalized tutoring.
In a practical case in a county in Xiangxi, Hunan, an AI teaching assistance system helped primary school teachers shorten their lesson preparation time from an average of 2.5 hours per class to 1 hour, and improved the efficiency of homework grading by about 70%. Teachers can use the saved time for one-on-one tutoring and teaching design optimization, indirectly improving teaching quality and students' classroom participation.
3、 Language AI: Breaking through the barriers between dialects and Mandarin
There are a large number of dialect usage scenarios in rural areas of China, and some students in remote areas have weaker Mandarin expression abilities, which to some extent affects their ability to learn online and access standardized educational resources. The development of AI speech recognition and synthesis technology provides a solution for this.
At present, multiple technology companies have launched AI education products that support dialect recognition, which can recognize major dialects such as Cantonese, Minnan, Hakka, and Wu, and achieve the translation of dialects into standard Mandarin. This means that a rural student whose native language is the local dialect can use AI's dialect translation function to learn high-quality course content taught in Mandarin without barriers.
4、 Challenges and Prospects
Although AI has shown great potential in narrowing the education gap, its practical implementation still faces multiple challenges. The first is infrastructure. By the end of 2025, about 8% of China's schools still have no access to broadband Internet, mainly in remote areas in the west. Secondly, there is a gap in digital literacy - rural teachers have a generally low proficiency in using AI educational tools and require supporting training. In addition, data privacy and security issues also need to be taken seriously, especially when it comes to the collection and use of underage learning data.
