With the rapid development of AI Agent technology, big language models are no longer limited to conversational interactions, but require calling external tools, accessing databases, executing code, and so on. The MCP (Model Context Protocol) protocol is an open standard born in this context, aimed at providing a unified and secure external tool connection method for AI agents.
The MCP protocol was first proposed by Anthropic at the end of 2024 and quickly gained support from mainstream AI vendors such as OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft. This protocol defines a standardized interface between AI models and external tools, similar to the plug and play capabilities provided by the USB standard for external devices. Through the MCP protocol, developers can add various capabilities to AI agents, such as querying databases, sending emails, and controlling smart home devices, just like installing applications.
The core architecture of the protocol consists of three key components: the client (AI Agent), MCP server (tool provider), and protocol layer (communication specification). When AI agents need to perform specific tasks, they can discover available tools, understand tool parameters, initiate calls, and obtain results through the MCP protocol. The entire process uses JSON-RPC format for communication, supporting both synchronous and asynchronous calling modes.
In practical applications, the MCP protocol has shown great potential. For example, an MCP based AI programming assistant can simultaneously call multiple tools such as code completion, terminal commands, Git operations, etc., without the need to write separate integration code for each tool. This significantly reduces the complexity of AI application development and greatly improves the reusability of tools.
Security is another important consideration in the design of MCP protocol. The protocol has built-in mechanisms such as permission control, call auditing, and sandbox isolation to ensure that AI agents do not operate beyond their authority when calling tools. Each tool call requires clear authorization, and the call records are traceable.
At present, the ecosystem of MCP protocol is rapidly expanding. There are over 2000 open-source MCP servers on GitHub, covering various fields such as databases, cloud services, office software, developer tools, and more. It is expected that within the next two years, MCP will become the standard protocol for AI agents to connect with the external world, driving the evolution of AI from a "conversational assistant" to an "all powerful executor".
