Meta published findings on 14 October from a YouGov study it commissioned of almost 4,000 small business owners in nine Asia-Pacific markets: Australia, Singapore, Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan, India, Thailand, Japan and Hong Kong. It reported that 84% of respondents currently use AI, 76% report a positive impact on productivity and 71% a positive impact on revenue or sales over the past 12 months. Four in five said AI helps small businesses compete more effectively with larger companies and makes starting a business easier, and 83% said it lets them do things that previously required significantly more money or resources. Among those reporting a productivity gain, 58% said they put the time into improving existing work, 50% into growth and business planning and 46% into getting more done with the same team. The most common uses were creating or editing content (51%), local advertising and marketing (43%), translation (38%) and customer support (37%). At the same time, 86% said small businesses need more guidance to get the full benefit, with cost the leading barrier to training at 51%. Meta pointed to its Small Business Growth Academy and its advertising tools as the response.

Our take

Our take: Read the task mix before the headline. Usage clusters where language models are already strong — content editing (51%), translation (38%), customer support (37%) — while the one task that needs measurement, advertising, sits at 43%. The 86% asking for guidance is the more informative number: with cost named as the top training barrier at 51%, the gap looks like competence (knowing what to check and when) rather than access. Two caveats to hold: all figures are self-reported, and the sample is Asia-Pacific, so it says little about US or EU adoption.
