Gemini Notebook now shows its plan before it renders slides or video

A Google blog post published October 19 by product manager Viraj Doshi and designer Shan Wang describes a change to how Gemini Notebook produces Slide Decks and Video Overviews. Instead of moving from an initial prompt straight to a finished artifact, the tool now proposes topics drawn from the user's sources, then lets the user steer content as well as visual style and format. A new Review toggle exposes an intermediate artifact: Review outline notes for slides and Review producer notes for video, where the user can ask for changes such as an executive summary at the start or a different scene order before anything renders; selecting Proceed then produces the final output. Users who prefer a single pass can skip the toggle and generate directly from the studio panel. Google says the co-creation features roll out globally to all Gemini Notebook users over the coming week.

Our take

The change is architectural rather than cosmetic: generation becomes a two-stage pipeline with an inspectable intermediate artifact that is supposed to be grounded in the user's own sources. Failures get cheaper to catch, and it becomes possible to check whether the cited material actually reached the deck. It also splits evaluation in two, since plan quality can be scored separately from render quality, which is where most of the compute goes. Unresolved: whether outline edits are honored deterministically downstream, or only steer a second probabilistic pass.
