Microsoft AI released MAI Image 2.7 in preview on October 27, an image editing model it says improves control over edits that are hardest to get right: restyling or relighting an entire scene, changing text and symbols while keeping them integrated into the image, restoring and enhancing existing assets, and edits that depend on understanding how objects, lighting and environments interact.

According to Microsoft, the model improves on MAI-Image-2.6 across all 10 use cases and all 7 editing actions that Artificial Analysis evaluates, and reaches the frontier in enhancement and restoration, reasoning-based edits, scene and style, and text or symbol editing. Its largest margin is scene and style, where the company says it scores 24 Elo ahead of the next-best model. It debuts at No. 3 on Arena Edit, which Microsoft says makes its AI unit the No. 2 lab on that board, and No. 2 on Artificial Analysis's image editing leaderboard.

The model is available for editing through Arena, Artificial Analysis and the MAI Playground. Microsoft says text-to-image generation is coming later.

Our take

Elo gaps of this size are a preference signal, not a capability guarantee. Arena and Artificial Analysis both aggregate human votes on prompts the vendor does not publish, so a 24-point scene-and-style lead says raters preferred those edits, not that the model holds object identity or geometry better across repeated edits. The 10-use-case, 7-action sweep is also vendor-reported. A per-edit failure taxonomy would be more useful than another leaderboard position.
