China's cyberspace administration announced the 2026 World Internet Conference Leading Science and Technology Award on 2 November in Wuzhen. Organisers said more than 430 results were submitted from 43 countries and regions across basic research, key technology and engineering development, and 20 were selected: two in basic research, ten in key technology and eight in engineering development. The stated scope covered brain-computer interfaces, embodied intelligence, quantum computing, space information transmission and high-performance chips. AI-related winners include a multimodal tactile sensing platform for physical intelligence (TouchZero), a general robot manipulation base model (Xiaomi), Huawei's Ascend 950 supernode, Alibaba Cloud's Qoder agent productivity platform, Horizon's vehicle agent platform for physical AI, AMD's Ryzen AI Max+ agent PC processor and Microsoft's Copilot Cowork. Other winners include a photonic quantum computing prototype and a satellite for sustainable development research.
Our takeThe list is a map of where the technical bottleneck is being placed: tactile sensing, robot manipulation base models, agent runtimes and inference hardware, rather than chat benchmarks. What it does not carry is a method. The award describes its criteria as frontier, breakthrough and industrial impact, with no shared task set or measurement protocol behind the ranking, so the 20 names are a portfolio of directions rather than a comparison. The next thing to watch is whether any of these categories produces a common evaluation, the way terminal benchmarks did for coding agents.
