Anthropic launched the Anthropic Cyber Mission, built on two parts: a Critical Infrastructure Defense Program that brings frontier Claude models, on-site engineers and threat research to defenders of operational technology such as power grids, water systems and transport networks; and OSS Scanner, a free tool that runs regular security scans on open-source projects using the company's strongest models. Founding partners of the defence programme include Accenture, Booz Allen, CrowdStrike, Deloitte, Dragos, Hitachi, Nozomi Networks, Palo Alto Networks, PwC and Rockwell Automation. Anthropic also says that since a June cyber-defence programme it has offered frontier Claude models and technical support to more than half of all US states and several large public critical-infrastructure operators.

Our take

Two moves in one: a programme aimed at the buyers who matter, and a free scanner that pushes frontier capability into the open-source supply chain everyone depends on. The second is the more interesting — model vendors are starting to behave like the security layer beneath the software stack. Watch whether the scans surface problems faster than they create liability.
