According to Google DeepMind, the company is making its SynthID Detector available to everyone, globally in English, starting October 7. Previously the tool was offered only to media professionals. SynthID, launched in 2023, embeds imperceptible watermarks into AI-generated images, video and audio; Google says it has watermarked more than 180 billion images and videos and about 240,000 years of audio. The public detector flags content made with AI from Google or its partners, including OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao, with Apple to follow. Google adds that similar verification features in Search, the Gemini app and Chrome now handle over 1 million requests a day.

Our take

A free, public watermark checker is a genuine step toward provenance, but note the framing: it verifies Google's own SynthID marks and those of opted-in partners. Content from models that do not embed SynthID simply will not be flagged, so a null result is not proof a file is human-made, and a watermark only survives if downstream editing tools preserve it. Useful, but it is one vendor's detector, not a neutral standard. The open question is whether rival labs and editing apps keep the signal intact.
